Adam Fryer – Geneva Native

Growing up, I frequently created music with friends, acted and directed plays through the Geneva Theatre Guild, became a member of the St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy Senior Choir in high school and joined the University of Buffalo Drumline at school. Music has and always will be a huge part of my life and in 2013 I created the Two Herons Drum Circle to share music and drumming with friends.

My original intent was to meet with a couple buddies by the lake on a weekly basis to jam and learn how to play hand percussion better, together. By our second meet-up it had quickly evolved into busking and inviting passersby

to join us. Soon I gave our tiny group its name, and with a flood of donations of drums and money to buy more drums, we volunteered part of our weekends to jamming by the lake and inviting people to join us. Sometimes leading to drum circles of more than 40 people in the community.

The drumming never stopped and we’ve held open community drum circles almost every month since. Father Jim Adams and Jill Ritter of St. Peter’s were some of our earliest supporters and offered us space during the colder months. The outpouring of support from the community has been amazing and I’ve given back by gathering volunteers to clean up community parks, hold drum workshops in local schools, libraries facilities for the developmentally disabled, and wherever youth may have little access to arts and community activities.

Without St. Peter’s, businesses and other community members believing in me and the mission of the Drum Circle we wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much and share the love and fun of music to so many over the years. We’ve expanded our reach and have offered workshops from Watkins Glen, to Sodus Point, even Monroe County ARC in Rochester. Our programming has expanded beyond just open jams to also include Traditional African Drum and Dance performances and Meditation/Wellness drum circles.

I’m very grateful to live in a community where its members see potential and foster it. Thank you St. Peter’s Community Arts Academy for seeing the potential in me and everyone that passes through your doors.
